FIGURE 6.16 As the skier, who weighs 120 pounds, actively extends upward, the force between her feet and the scale increases (indicated by the increase in her apparent weight), accelerating her upward. Once the upward acceleration ends, the skier is “light” until she slows the downward fall that follows.

Down-unweighting begins with the skier’s center of gravity accelerating toward the snow (figures 6.18 and 9.20a on p. 153). A skier passing over a drop-off or simply relaxing quickly from a tall stance experiences a down-unweighting. There is no initial upward acceleration of the center of gravity. The force supporting the skier’s body simply disappears or is dramatically reduced, so the skier’s center of gravity accelerates downward. While it accelerates, the force under the skis is reduced.
